    Handball shooting drills

Shooting drills for handball coaches — wing angles, backcourt jump shots and finishing under fatigue. Each drill lists the setup, how it runs and the coaching points that matter.

    Wing shooting from the angle

Finishing from the tight wing angle with height and a clear target.

    AgeU12+Players4–12Time12–15 minIntensityMedium

    Set-up

A feeder at centre back, a cone stack of balls, and the wings queued on both flanks. A goalkeeper in goal.

    How it runs

    1. The centre back passes wide to the wing running toward the corner.
    2. The wing catches in the air, takes off from outside the goal-area line and finishes.
    3. Alternate left and right wing so both sides get equal reps.
    4. Progress by adding a passive blocker who forces the wing wider.

    Coaching points

    • Jump out and up, not just up — get height and a better angle on goal.
    • Release at the top of the jump; aim near-post low or far-post high.
    • Time the run so the catch happens in the air, not standing still.

Nine-metre jump shot over the block

Backcourt shooting technique over a defensive block.

    AgeU14+Players6–14Time12–18 minIntensityMedium

    Set-up

Backcourt shooters at the nine-metre line, two blockers in front of goal, a feeder and a goalkeeper.

    How it runs

    1. The shooter receives on the move and takes three steps into a jump shot.
    2. Two blockers raise their arms to force the ball up and over.
    3. Rotate shooters through left back, centre back and right back positions.
    4. Progress the blockers from passive to semi-active jumping.

    Coaching points

    • Drive the non-throwing arm and lead knee up to gain height over the block.
    • Keep the ball high and behind the head until the last moment to disguise the release.
    • Pick a corner before you jump — decide early, commit late.

    Finishing under fatigue

Holding shooting accuracy when tired, like the last ten minutes of a match.

    AgeU15+Players4–10Time10–12 minIntensityHigh

    Set-up

Balls stacked at centre; a target zone marked in each top corner of the goal.

    How it runs

    1. The player sprints to a cone, back to the ball, then takes a shot at a marked corner.
    2. Repeat five shots in a row without rest, scoring only shots that hit the target zone.
    3. Rotate out, recover, and run a second and third set.

    Coaching points

    • Keep the throwing technique the same when tired — no arm-only shots.
    • Breathe and reset your feet before each shot even under time pressure.
    • Track hits on target across sets so players see fatigue's effect.
